Glacier National Park

Less than an hour from the Sentinel Pine lies Glacier National Park, one of America's most famed national parks. It contains more than one million acres of majestic snow-capped mountains, crystal clear lakes, lush valleys, and beautiful alpine meadows. Everything you want to know about Glacier Park can be found at www.nps.gov/glac/ and www.glacier.national-park.com .

In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, which stretch from the Grand Tetons to Canada, Glacier Park has some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet. Whether one is interested in animals, flora, fauna, or geology, Glacier offers a stunning portrayal of our planet's evolution and sheer majesty. Its diverse animal habitat is home to more than 70 species of mammals, including bighorn sheep, moose lynx, and the grizzly bear. Over 260 species of birds reside in the park, including the golden eagle, harlequin duck, and the dipper. For the botanist, over one thousand species of plants are to be found, many unique to these alpine and sub-alpine regions. Glacier is also a geological treasure that is the product of well over a billion years of creation, first as a sea, then a home to the great Cretaceous dinosaurs, and then a set of sedimentary rocks uplifted to nearly 12,000 feet and carved by ice sheets into the magnificent spectacle you see today.

Glacier was established as a national park in 1910, and the famed Going-to-the-Sun Highway was built about twenty years later. This road allows the park to be as easily enjoyed by those who are limited to their automobiles as those who hike into its inner reaches. Directly over the Canadian border that marks Glacier's northern boundary lies Waterton National Park in Canada, which is equally beautiful. Joined together as the Waterton Glacier International Peace Park, they are one of the world's first international environmental cooperatives.

Glacier Park is typically open from May to September and, as one of America's finest and most spectacular remaining wilderness, it is an incredible must-see destination, perfectly suited to visit from the Sentinel Pine "base camp" when you choose us as your Swan Lake vacation rental.
